Background of the Study
Public health campaigns are vital for disseminating important information, particularly in contexts where clear communication can save lives. In Nigeria, such campaigns are delivered through various broadcast media, including television and radio. Semantic transparency, the clarity with which information is conveyed, plays a crucial role in ensuring that public health messages are understood by diverse audiences (Okoro, 2023). This study compares the semantic transparency of public health campaigns across different broadcast formats. It examines the lexical choices, syntactic structures, and discourse markers used in these campaigns to determine how effectively they convey health-related information. Given the diversity of the Nigerian population, clear semantic expression is essential to overcome potential language barriers and promote health literacy. The research will analyze broadcast samples from multiple campaigns, assessing factors such as simplicity, coherence, and cultural relevance. By identifying best practices in semantic transparency, the study aims to provide recommendations that can enhance the effectiveness of public health communication, ultimately contributing to better health outcomes and informed communities (Okoro, 2023; Afolabi, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical importance of semantic transparency in public health campaigns, there is limited research comparing the clarity of messages across different broadcast media in Nigeria. Existing studies often focus on the content of the messages rather than on the linguistic factors that affect comprehension. This gap in the literature makes it challenging to identify how variations in semantic clarity may contribute to misinterpretations or reduced effectiveness of public health messages. Without a clear understanding of these factors, efforts to improve health communication may fall short, potentially compromising public health outcomes. This study addresses this issue by systematically analyzing the semantic transparency of broadcast health campaigns to identify strengths and weaknesses in message delivery (Okoro, 2023; Afolabi, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the semantic transparency of Nigerian public health campaigns on broadcasts.
To compare linguistic features across different broadcast media.
To recommend improvements for clearer public health messaging.
Research Questions
What linguistic features contribute to semantic transparency in public health broadcasts?
How do television and radio campaigns compare in terms of message clarity?
What strategies can enhance semantic transparency in health communications?
Significance of the Study
This study provides valuable insights into the role of semantic transparency in public health campaigns. The findings will help public health officials, broadcasters, and communication specialists develop clearer and more effective messages, ultimately contributing to improved health literacy and outcomes in Nigeria (Okoro, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to analyzing semantic transparency in Nigerian public health campaigns delivered via broadcast media and does not extend to print or online formats.
